Swimming pool vacuums get suction from the skimmer inlet under the strainer basket in the bottom of the skimmer box. When the strainer basket is removed and the vacuum hose is plugged directly into this inlet, suction force is diverted to the vacuum head at the end of the hose to suck dirt and debris off the pool floor. Vacuuming unstrained water directly into the skimmer suction inlet, however, risks clogging the skimmer line with debris. A vacuum plate fits on top of the standard-size strainer basket and incorporates a fitting that allows the vacuum hose to be plugged into the vacuum plate and receive suction from the inlet without removing the strainer basket. This reduces the potential of skimmer line clogs and expensive service calls. Perform standard prevacuum procedure, including backwashing the pool filter and cleaning the pump basket.

Turn off the pool circulation pump. Close the valve before the pump that draws water from the main drain to divert all pump suction force to the skimmer inlet. Attach the vacuum head to the end of the telescoping pole. Connect the end of the vacuum hose with the swivel cuff to the hose fitting on the vacuum head. Remove the skimmer lid, take out the the strainer basket and clean out any debris. Replace the strainer basket in the skimmer. Connect the stationary cuff on the other end of the vacuum hose to the hose fitting on the vacuum plate. Submerge the vacuum head to the bottom of the pool and hold the other end of the vacuum hose under water to completely fill the vacuum hose with water. Turn on the pool circulation pump. Insert the end of the vacuum hose with the vacuum plate attached through the skimmer opening and press-fit the vacuum plate down on top of the skimmer basket. Vacuum the pool normally. After vacuuming is completed, turn off the circulation pump, remove the vacuum plate and clean any vacuumed debris out the strainer basket.

Open the valve to draw water from the main drain. 4. With the pump and filter running, take the other end of the hose and put it up against a return jet in the pool. If a vacuum plate is NOT being used, remove the basket inside the skimmer, block (with your hand) the end of the hose that has been filled up with water, and bring it over and into the skimmer. Make sure the hose is inserted into the suction hole at the bottom of the skimmer. If a vac plate is being used, attach it to the end of the hose that was up against the return jet, block the opening, and bring it over to the skimmer. Be sure to create a good seal or suction will be lost.

This will create the suction from the vac head, through the hose, into the skimmer, and through the filter system. Now, it’s time to vacuum the pool. NOTE: if suction is lost, just repeat steps 4 and 5. When it comes to manually vacuuming the pool, slow and steady wins the race. When trying to rush vacuum, it will just kick up debris, which will settle back down and forcing another vacuuming session.
