Excessively hard water is a problem for swimming pools. Calcium absorbs chlorine rapidly, taking it out of service. It is very difficult to balance your chemistry when your pool is full of dissolved minerals. You find yourself adding more and more chemicals to try and maintain a clean pool. You can feel and smell these chemicals and it isn’t the nicest swimming experience. Chances are that you won’t be able to keep up with the chlorine demand and algae will gain a foothold in your pool. As swimming pool water evaporates, the hardness minerals stay in solution thus scaling the liner, tile, pumps and motors. Bring out the pumice stone! Having some calcium is important as it holds the liner together but too much will decrease the life span of the pool, pumps and filters.
