We do on occasion use these portable units when our more powerful truck-mount carpet cleaning machines don’t reach the areas we are trying to clean, they work great but require more patience as they are much less powerful and extracting the water from your carpet takes much longer then normal.

Carpet cleaning rentals are cheaper then hiring a professional but don’t forget that you still have to purchase the chemicals and depending on the type of stains and how heavily the traffic areas are soiled, this can cost you an additional 30 – 40 dollars on top of the rental machine. We also suggest that you rent a blower at the same time to help speed your dry time so that you don’t create a situation that allows mold and mildew to start growing. One of the most common mistakes that a homeowner makes when trying to clean their own carpets is leaving them to wet. This promotes mold and mildew growth which is not only harmful to your health but also creates bad smells throughout the home. So I guess my answer would be both when asked to use a professional carpet cleaner or rent a portable carpet cleaner. I think if a home owner has the time to devote to cleaning the carpets and making sure that they are good and dry when finished then they can save about 30% of what it would have cost to have a professional carpet cleaner come in and do the job.
