We have a pool, and we read all the guides and spent a lot of money on chemicals at first until we realized something that no one will tell you.  SUNSHINE is what is cauing all the green. Algae grows in sunshine.  The pool took us several weeks and thousands of dollars of chemicals to clean it the first years at the beginning of the season. We had the pump running for days and a lot of electricity and a lot of vacuming and a lot of chemicals. This year season, the pool was green and you couldn't see it after winter and I did the easiest thing possible. Here is how we did it.. 1.  Rent or buy ( I bought one) a 200 gallon per minute 5 horsepower water pump (200 bucks) and used the water pump with a two inch hose and sucked the water completely out of the pool in just a few hours. 2. Get the trusty pressure washer and wash the walls of the pool as it is pumping out, by the time it is pumped out, the walls are sparkly clean. Then pressure wash the floor. 3. Get a plastic snow shovel and a plastic garbage can and scoop up what is left on the bottom then pressure wash it into a neat little pile and use a dust pan to clean the rest.

4.  Throw the water hose into the pool and turn it on. Put everything back together, Plumbed in a 50 gallon per minute water sterilizer unit (uses ultraviolet light) in line after the filter and leave it on all the time.  a1 pool cleaningThe sterilizer kills all bacteria and viruses and alga that flow through the pump. best vacuum cleaner laminate floorsruns on like 5 cents a day. When we cover the pool at the end of the day, we use the blue bubble plastic to keep the heat in, and then put a 6 mil black visquine plastic sheet over the top. You can buy it in 100 foot roll and 30 feet wide. just the size of our pool. Black plastic absorbs sunshine and turns it into heat and wamrs the pool.  AND IT PREVENTS ALGAE FROM GROWING CAUSE THERE IS NNO SUSHINE IN THE POOL.  If the pool people wanted to go broke not selling chemicals, they would make their pool covering plastic BLACK instead of transparent blue. 

You see, the bubble plastic would then  not allow any algae to grow.  But since algae is what keeps the chimical people in business this would be counter productive. So just make your own. Our pool right now in central Oregon we easily keep at 92 degrees. The black plastic lets no algae grows in the pool so you do not need chlorine. Everytime we take the plastic off the blue is warm and blue. Remember, black plastic SINKS so you have to put it on top of the BUBLBLE plastic to keep it floating. Finally, just to kill germs and viruses we bought a pool ozinator made for a 50,000 gallon pool, and attached a 1 inch hose attached to a metal weight and toss it into the deep end for output.  The input is taken from the shallow end by one inch hose.  It is MADE for plumbing inline in the pool house, but this does not work as well, we tried it.  Pumping the ozone into the bottom of the deep end bubbles up through a lot of water and keeps the pool clean. When we cover the pool, the ozinator is turned on and ozone runs in the dark until we use the pool again.

We don't use chemicals, just sunshine and oxygen.  This took us several thousand dollars and hundreds of hours to discover.  Hope this saves you time and money. If it turns green for some reason, just shock it every couple weeks. This happened once when we kept it uncovered for a week straight. But it sure uses a lot less chemical nowadays and a lot less pump activity. When a pool is reallly green, and growing on the walls and you can't see the bottom, we would just pump it out and refill it. Very simple and easy for us.
