'The washing-up liquid solution was as good or better on blood and fresh Ribena and did a terrific job on red wine. Only chocolate spread and dried-in coffee defeated it.' Soda water, often suggested as a useful alternative to specialist preparations, did not score well across the range of stains.

said: 'It was good at removing blood and fresh Ribena, but it didn't match the specialist products on the other stains.' A spokesman for the group said the 500ml bottle of washing-up liquid scored four out of five for cleaning fresh stains and dry stains. Bottom of the stain-cleaning league was one of the most expensive products in the test, Bissell Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner at £6.70 for 355ml. It scored three on fresh stains and just two on dry. said: 'This is a "Don't Buy". As well as finding it difficult to apply, it wasn't good at removing stains, and we found it removed the colour from dark carpet when left.' said a host of cheaper specialist carpet and upholstery cleaners also did well. Top score went to Sainsbury's own Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner spray at just £2.43 for 500ml. Rug Doctor Spot & Stain Remover spray came in second at £2.99 for 500ml, with Tesco's own-label spray at £2.44 for 500ml in third. Bissell said its products were specially formulated to tackle tough stains and dry quickly without leaving any sticky residue. It said of its Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner: 'The fabric-safe brush works gently on expensive carpets. It gently loosens and removes tough stains and embedded dirt.'A housecall from the Rug Doctor improves even the dirtiest carpets. Between the daily wear and tear from shoes, pets and settling dust, and the inevitable spills and accidents, your carpets take a real beating. A Rug Doctor carpet cleaner can't perform miracles, but it can make a significant difference in the appearance of even the dirtiest carpet. You can buy a Rug Doctor machine, or rent one at many supermarkets and home improvement centers. Carpet Material You can safely clean most carpet materials, including nylon and polyester, with a Rug Doctor.

But the manufacturer recommends against using their machine on certain natural fibers. It’s not advisable to use a water-extraction machine like the Rug Doctor on Oriental rugs made with silk or wool, hand-loomed or braided wool rugs, sisal or jute. It's safe to use a Rug Doctor on wool Berber carpet, but because the closely looped weave retains moisture, plan on extra time vacuuming up the water. Preparation Thorough preparation is critical to achieving the best results when cleaning any carpet, but even more so if your floors are very dirty. Pick a warm, clear day without excessive humidity to shampoo your carpets. Move all small furniture off your carpets, and remove small area rugs that don’t need cleaning. Empty the bag or canister of your vacuum cleaner and vacuum carpeted floors thoroughly. Vacuum each room twice, once moving vertically, the next time working horizontally to remove as much loose dirt and debris as possible. Treating Stains Though some stains are almost impossible to remove completely, pretreating helps to improve even the dirtiest carpet.

Rug Doctor recommends using their products to pretreat stains. For sticky, oily stains like motor oil, food grease or lipstick, use Hi-Traffic Pre-Treatment. Stains from food, ink, dirt and unidentified substances respond well to Spot & Stain Remover. Treat pet accidents and other bodily fluid stains with Urine Eliminator. Spray the appropriate treatment onto your carpet's dirty spots, and let the formula soak in for several minutes while you ready the Rug Doctor machine for cleaning. Cleaning Fill the reservoir of your Rug Doctor with hot water. The manufacturer recommends adding 1/2 cup of Rug Doctor Carpet Cleaner to the water for the dirtiest carpets, or 1/4 cup of Carpet Cleaner if your rugs are only lightly soiled. Turn the machine on, and begin slowly walking backwards across the carpet, pulling the Rug Doctor from one side of the room to the other. On lightly soiled carpet, the manufacturer recommends moving at a pace of one foot per second, but very dirty carpets need a slower pace of one foot every two seconds.
