Our family had a 10-day Jeep rental through Budget. The vehicle was a little beat up when we got it, but we didn’t mind. Upon return to the airport, we were told that they were going to charge us $75 for excess cleaning because there was sand on the floor. Of course we’re on vacation on an island where you go to the beach every day. I think it’s reasonable to expect there to be sand on the floor. There was not a ton of sand; there were no spills or stains on the upholstery or floor; there was no trash. They seemed concerned that we did not keep the sand on the tiny floor mats. We had the option of leaving the airport and finding some place to vacuum it out. Of course we could not use their equipment for liability reasons. We took 10 minutes to scrape and pick sand out of the car until it met the satisfaction of the inspector. It would have taken one of their workers 5 minutes with a shop vac. They very reluctantly relented and did not charge us the fee. We were fortunate to not be in a big hurry to catch our flight.
I’m sure they pull this on many people who don’t have the time or inclination to satisfy their nitpicky crew. In 30 years of travelling, this is the first time I’ve ever run into anything like this. Has anyone else experienced this? Sounds like they were just having a picky day. Maybe there were a few Jeeps ahead of you and/or they focus on Jeeps more with the open air design. I'm always reluctant to call it a scam when it might be just a bad day. What was the attitude of the attendant? This is printed on the Alamo contract >>>Minimum $50 cleaning fee for cars returned with excessive sand, dirt, mud, trash or pet hair.<<< Who decides what is excessive??? Never wanted to find out, so we've always either brushed or vacuumed the worst of the sand. Valid, 3chihuahuas, although twice through Alamo I've never had anyone even glance inside my car upon return except to check mileage. Because our sand tends to be in the trunk, I take the carpet liner out and shake it down.
I try to scrape, shake, shovel as much sand out of the car as I can...but part of that is selfish...keeping the sand out of the condo everyday! HA We always do a "spot-check" before we drop the car off, normally when we are doing the last gas stop, and try not to leave it too bad. Never, ever had a problem! Somebody was very, very picky! Maybe they knew you'd violated your contract and driven the back road from Hana.........but figured trying to collect 75.00 was easier than arguing with you about that. I understand the Budget employees all have ESP and can tell where you've gone. Funny...you pick up the car at the airport and it's all nice and clean, still wet from the quick car washing, smells okay. Within a week, there are multiple bent coupon books, ABC bags, sand and the remains of at least one bag of Maui Chips! Interestingly enough, other than the Maui Chips, this is exactly the same way our rental cars ended up when we vacationed several times on Hilton Head Island, S.C.! While I realize this won't help this poster, there is a car wash not too far from the airport at Hobron Lane and Hana Highway, across from Maui Mercedes, where they have great vacuums so you can do it yourself if you are afraid you may be charged for excessive cleaning. The notice about sand etc. clean up was actually brought to our attention when we picked up the car. Guess they've had to spend too much time = money on cleaning out sandy cars.
